Job Overview

Friendship Press, the publishing arm of the National Council of Churches in the United States seeks a Chief Executive Officer to oversee all aspects of the program. Working under the direction of the Friendship Press Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer is the public face of the press, maintaining strong and beneficial relationships with the National Council of Churches and its many communions and constituencies.

The Chief Executive Officer also serves as the publisher of the press, leading the editorial and product development processes as well as sales and marketing efforts.

The mission of Friendship Press is to be a good news publisher that provides resources that nurture sacred wisdom, cultivate community, foster justice, and promote peace for the welfare of humanity and the unity of creation.

Work Location and Travel

  • Work is done from home using Zoom and other platforms for online meetings.
  • Travel to the annual Christian Unity Gathering and Governing Board meeting of National Council of Churches (NCC) is required.
  • Travel to the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and other events may be required for promotional purposes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide publishing, editorial, and marketing leadership to Friendship Press by:
    • developing organizational and institutional partnerships that result in missional and financially successful publishing projects.
    • publishing books that further NCC’s mission and objectives.
    • creating innovative and impactful marketing campaigns that drive product sales and move Friendship Press toward sustainability.
  • Lead the Bible Translation and Utilization Committee in their work of advising NCC on matters related to the RSV, NRSV, and NRSVue translations.
  • Uphold high standards in the management of the annual budget and business operations.
  • Maintain strong relationships with the NCC as Friendship Press’s chief partner.
  • Manage key contractors including licensing management agency, software systems,  publishing services), accounting firm, etc.  

  • Oversee processes related to website and Kindle sales

  • Interface with FP legal counsel as required


  • An advanced degree in Bible, theology, English, journalism, or a related field of study.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in Bible or religious publishing.
  • At least 5 years of editorial experience in publishing or a related field.
  • Membership in a member communion of the NCC is highly desired.
  • Familiarity of and appreciation for the heritage of the RSV, NRSV, NRSVue translations.
  • Demonstrated record of success in strategic planning, decision making, and problem solving in the publishing industry
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial statements and business operations
  • Digital competency with broad range of apps and systems
  • Clear writing and communication skills
  • Capacity to interact with Biblical scholars/scholarship in matters of Bible usage
  • Marketing and digital marketplace experience
  • Sensitivity to ecumenical and interreligious audiences
